Ingredients
  

For the Bolognese Sauce

  • 1 pound 1 pound (about 450g) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1 medium 1 onion, finely chopped Finely chopped
  • 2 cloves 2 cloves garlic, minced Minced
  • 1 large 1 carrot, finely chopped Finely chopped
  • 1 stalk 1 celery stalk, finely chopped Finely chopped
  • 14 oz 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup red wine (optional) Optional ingredient
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing

For the Pasta

  • 16 oz 16 oz (about 450g) spaghetti
  • Salt for boiling water To taste

For Serving

  • Grated Parmesan cheese For topping
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional) Optional garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, carrot, and celery. Sauté until they become soft and fragrant, typically for about 5 minutes.

Cooking the Bolognese Sauce

  • Add the ground beef or beef-pork mix to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables.
  • Cook the meat until it's browned and cooked through, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  • If using red wine, add it to the sauce.
  • Let the sauce simmer for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Cooking the Pasta

  • Cook the spaghetti in a large pot of salted boiling water according to the package instructions until it's al dente.
  • Drain the pasta.

Serving

  • Plate the cooked spaghetti.
  • Spoon the Bolognese sauce over the pasta.
  • Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves, if desired.
