  • 500 g lean minced beef Use lean for a healthier option.
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil For cooking.
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 750 ml beef stock Use homemade or low-sodium for best flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds depth to the flavor.

For the Tatties

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered Choose a starchy variety for mashing.

For Garnishing

  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped For garnish.

Preparing the Tatties

  • Place the potatoes in a large pot of salted water.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.
  • Drain and mash the potatoes with a bit of butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Cooking the Mince

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  • Add the onion and carrots, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Increase the heat, add the minced beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and brown it.
  • Pour in the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce, bring to a simmer, and let it cook gently, uncovered, for about 30 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and thickened.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Assembly and Serving

  • Spoon the rich and flavorful mince onto a plate, creating a bed for the smooth, creamy tatties.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of color and freshness. Serve hot.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with herbs and spices. Rosemary, thyme, or a bay leaf can enhance the flavor profile. You can also substitute the beef with lamb, turkey, or a vegetarian alternative.
