Ingredients
  

For the Cherry Base

  • 2 cans 20 ounces each tart cherry pie filling Opt for high-quality tart cherry pie filling or fresh cherries if in season.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the cherry flavor.

For the Cake Layer

  • 1 box 15.25 ounces yellow cake mix Do not mix into the cherry filling.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Use room temperature melted butter for even distribution.
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional) Add for texture and flavor.

For Serving

  • as needed Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream Optional but highly recommended.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the tart cherry pie filling with vanilla extract. Mix gently.
  • Pour the cherry filling into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Sprinkle the yellow cake mix evenly over the cherry filling without mixing.
  • Drizzle melted butter over the dry cake mix.
  • Sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans on top of the melted butter (optional).

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  • Remove from oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Serving

  • Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven as needed.
