Ingredients

  • 5 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 5-6 medium)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 package (14.1 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and center the rack.
  • In a bowl, combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice. Toss to coat; set aside.
  • Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim excess overhang.
  • Pour half the caramel sauce over the crust to create a base.
  • Add the spiced apple mixture evenly over the caramel.
  • Dot the apples with butter pieces.
  • Roll out the second crust and place it over the filling. Seal edges by crimping with fingers or a fork. Cut slits in the top for steam release.
  • Brush the top crust with the egg wash.
  • Bake for 50 minutes, until golden and bubbling.
  • Cool for 20 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Use crisp tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results.
If using homemade pie crust, prep it in advance.
Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
