Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 4 large large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or preferred milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional) adds warmth and spice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional) sweetens the egg mixture
  • 8 slices brioche, challah, or thick-sliced white bread best types for soaking
  • 2 tablespoons butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit for serving optional toppings

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar until well combined.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 20-30 seconds per side. Ensure both sides are evenly coated but not overly soggy.

Cooking

  • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  • Place the soaked bread slices on the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and slightly crisp.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.

Serving

  • Serve immediately with your favorite toppings, such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for better texture and to prevent sogginess. Add a pinch of salt to balance sweetness. For extra richness, use heavy cream instead of milk. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
