Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups milk Use almond, soy, or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
  • 2 large eggs
  • 0.33 cup melted butter or vegetable oil Coconut oil can be used as a substitute for dairy-free or vegan option.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk, melted butter or oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  • Let the batter rest for a few minutes before cooking.
  • Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Once the waffle iron is hot, lightly grease it with cooking spray or a brush of oil.

Cooking

  • Pour the batter onto the center of the waffle iron, using about 1/2 cup for each waffle, or as recommended by your waffle iron's instructions.
  • Close the lid and cook until the waffle is golden brown and crisp, usually about 4-5 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the waffle and repeat with the remaining batter.
  • Serve the waffles immediately with your favorite toppings, such as fresh berries, sliced bananas, or a drizzle of honey.

Notes

For a lighter texture, you can substitute half of the whole wheat flour with all-purpose flour. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To freeze, place waffles on a baking sheet and freeze until solid before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag.
