Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

For the Sauce

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

For Serving

  • Mashed potatoes Optional, for serving

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well and form the mixture into 6-8 oval-shaped patties.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the hamburger steaks on both sides. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, whisk in the flour until smooth. Gradually add the beef broth and milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring occasionally until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the sour cream and melted butter.
  • Arrange the hamburger steaks in a baking dish. Pour the sauce over the steaks.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the steaks are cooked through.

Notes

Serve warm with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a side salad. To store leftovers, let cool completely, place in an airtight container, and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage up to 2 months.
