  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure your butter is truly softened for the best texture.
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour Don’t overmix the dough after adding the flour.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Omit if using salted butter.
  • 1 cup caramel bits For extra flavor, sprinkle a few on top before baking.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) Experiment with different types of nuts like pecans or walnuts.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to the creamed mixture, mixing until just combined.
  • Fold in the caramel bits and nuts, if using.
  • Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheets.

Baking

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, or freeze for up to three months.
