‘On the plate, Pittsburgh!’: Between the bread

Very local: ‘Plate It, Pittsburgh!’ challenges 2 local chefs to create three sandwich-themed courses

When you think of Pittsburgh cuisine, a few things come to mind before a sandwich. Sandwiches – better known as ‘sammiche’ – are clearly a staple of the city. In this episode of “Plate It, Pittsburgh!” two local chefs compete to create the best “between bread”, including appetizer, main course and dessert. Chefs will have fifteen minutes in the market to find, gather all their necessary ingredients and spend only $100. Claudy Pierre is the founder of Eminent Hospitality Solutions. With family from Haiti, born in Brooklyn, raised in New Jersey and living in Pittsburgh since 2003, Pierre has indeed experienced many influences in his cooking throughout his life. When he moved to Pittsburgh, he didn’t know much about the city other than his favorite football team, the Steelers. Pierre’s specialty is comfort food. Alex Brown is head chef at Wigle Whisky. Brown’s love of Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Penguins, brought him to Pittsburgh. Brown began to love cooking at an incredibly young age, somewhere around 3 to 4 years old, alternating between cartoons and cooking shows on his family’s television. Brown is classically trained in French cuisine and describes his cooking style as very traditional, with a twist. The winner walks away with “Plate It, Pittsburgh!” a tomato trophy and money for a charity of your choice. What is very local?
