10 Things You Need to Know Before You Buy a Costco Cake

WITH Costco‘with free samples and dirt cheap booze they steal spotlights, big box cake tins get lost in the shuffle. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find a bunch of shoppers in the bakery section obsessed with the cakes on sale. Before you join groups, here’s what you need to know.

1. They are insanely cheap.

Ordering a half sheet cake from Costco will set you back less than 20 bucks – $18.99 to be exact. Chances are you couldn’t beat that price even if you made it yourself. It also beats the competition: BJ’s, another big box store, sells a similarly sized cake for $24, and Walmart’s is nearly $25. In 2020, Costco took them off the shelves, so you may need to request or order in advance.

2. Costco cakes feed so many people.

You can serve 48 guests with just one of Costco’s half cakes. That means when the cuts are made and the pieces are made, you’ve only spent 39 cents per person.

3. One Costco cake weighs more than a newborn.

If you put your half pan cake on a scale, the number would be about nine and a half pounds. According to Costco’s order form, two of those pounds are pie filling.

4. There are only two flavors on the menu.

You can order what Costco refers to as white cake – aka vanilla – or chocolate cake. The first one is a vanilla cake filled with vanilla curd mousse, which is cooled with white buttercream. The latter is the chocolate version of that: chocolate cake, chocolate mousse filling and chocolate buttercream frosting.

5. Customers used to have more options.

You used to be able to pick up a carrot pie a sheet cake from Costco with apricot mousse filling and cream cheese frosting sprinkled with slivered almonds. Internationally, there are even more deals: Costco Australia lets you mix and match raspberry filling with either chocolate or vanilla sponge cake.

6. You can take a Costco cake home on the spot.

Costco has its bakery stocked with ready-made sheet cakes, some plain, some with birthday messages and — around the holidays — some with festive designs.

7. But custom orders require advance planning.

Give bakers a day or two’s notice to create something specific, such as an intricate design or special message.

8. Bakers can decorate in more than two dozen ways.

The cake order form reveals nearly 30 designs to choose from. There are classic ways to frost a sheet cake – with balloons or roses – and some more unconventional ways like a pirate ship, skateboard or party owl… whatever that means.

9. The dinosaur design was part of the scandal.

in 2015 Inquisitor broke story about the woman who complained dinosaur her child’s birthday cake had only three legs, each of which looked like the number “6.” She claimed that the bakers had hidden this demonic “666” message in the cake on purpose. But after some digging, it was discovered that the article was written by a friend of the mother interviewed, and placing Costco at the center of the story confirmed that no complaints had ever been received.

10. They are the perfect blank slate.

Any way you slice them, Costco sheet cakes can look incredibly simple, so home bakers have adapted them. You can pick up a cake that is only spread with a base layer and then whip it up at home.
